History of Batik
An overview of batik heritage in Bali:
Batik in Bali has a relatively recent history compared to other regions in Indonesia. The art of batik was introduced to Bali in the early 20th century by Javanese immigrants. Over time, the Balinese developed their own style of batik, which often reflects the island’s vibrant culture and artistic sensibilities.
Unique Bali Motifs: Balinese batik is characterized by its unique motifs, which are inspired by the island’s rich cultural heritage. Common motifs found in Balinese batik include traditional Balinese dancers, wayang kulit (shadow puppets), Barong masks (a mythical creature), scenes from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, and intricate floral and nature-inspired designs.
